And because of that, this means that if you’re not an internet person, you’re not really going to see us in the chat sidebar.

The algorithms are more complicated than that, but the basic idea is that if you’re not “friends” with the person(s) you’re looking at on facebook, you’re probably not going to see their conversation in the sidebar. We don’t think this is a bad thing because it’s a way to make sure that you’re not just chatting with random strangers.

But, you may ask, how does facebook decide who gets to see the chat sidebar? Facebook says that they dont know, but if youre the random stranger, you might be just the most interesting person they care about.

Thats the theory, but let us know if there is actually a person who is actually getting to see the sidebar. It could be random chance, or it could be a signal that they know exactly who you are.

This is definitely a theory, but you have to wonder how facebook is able to be so certain that someone is a random stranger. I mean it would be like if you woke up on the street and had only a phone number.

It is a theory, and not just that. Their sidebar is not random. It gets its information from your facebook friends list, and the odds are that the person who you were chatting with was in the sidebar, and if they are, then they are one of their friends. I am not sure if this is just a theory, but they are also not that interested in seeing you. They only want to see you if you are someone they have been chatting with on facebook.
